Looking Good and Feeling Great: How to Be More Confident in Your Appearance

Many people feel insecure about their looks, although even the most self-assured go through self-confidence slumps. Whether you’re worrying about your weight, afraid to wear the style of clothes you’d like to, or feeling less attractive than your friends, these insecurities are perfectly natural. However, they don’t have to get the best of you. There are simple ways to feel more confident in your appearance and start loving yourself more.

Wear Clothes That You Feel Good In

Wear what makes you comfortable, not what’s in style, not what your friends say would suit you, but clothes that make you feel good. That might be a pair of tight jeans, a baggy sweater, crazy patterns or simple neutrals, or maybe something you don’t even own yet. Try out different styles and get to know what makes you feel cool, sexy, or confident. When you shop, try to populate your wardrobe with more of these pieces and fewer things that ultimately will make you feel silly.

Take More Selfies

You don’t have to post pictures of yourself all over Facebook and Instagram, but try taking a daily pic of yourself and looking back at them at the end of the week. Try different poses or angles and fake some confidence for the camera: pout your lips, cock your hip, and smile! No one ever has to see these pictures, but the act of photographing yourself will help you find images you like and pinpoint what you’re wearing or doing on days when you feel more confident in your looks.

Ask Other People

It might be embarrassing at first, but try asking other people what they think about aspects of your appearance that you worry about. You’d be surprised by how many friends will exclaim “I never even noticed that!” when you mention your big nose, your fluctuating weight, or the birthmark that embarrasses you. Even if you suspect that they’re lying, the reinforcement will go a long way to helping your own confidence.

Forget The Mirror

Sometimes the best thing you can do is to ignore the mirror for a while. If you find that certain occasions trigger your insecurities (like going to social events, clothes shopping, or seeing family), then avoid the mirror when you’re faced with them. Pick an outfit you like the night before, put it on the next day without checking the mirror, and don’t let yourself obsess over your reflection before you leave for the event.

Don’t Obsess Over Comments

Maybe you have an aunt who always mentions your weight, or a certain friend who always makes a comment when you wear something new; just say “Thanks!” and move the conversation toward a different topic. This works whether you’re trying an edgy new look or just dealing with the same old remarks from specific people. It shuts down any negativity implied by the comment and helps you fake the confidence until you truly feel it.

Try these tips and you’ll feel more confident about your looks before you know it!
